There is an opinion that instructions stifle creativity. It's not like the instructions are forcing kids to not build freely. When I was younger, I knew I didn't have to follow the instructions.
Also,
it's not like all LEGO sets are X-Wings and Star Destroyers; even with
those, you can still rebuild an X-Wing into anything you want!
There are plenty of buckets filled with assorted LEGO bricks which don't have instructions ;-)
